Top Skincare Myths Debunked in Abilene, Texas, at The MedSpa at Hendrick

Proper skin care doesn’t have to be a mystery. And yet for many, it’s completely baffling, thanks in large part to the endless barrage of misleading product claims we’re exposed to on a daily basis. Luckily, The MedSpa at Hendrick is here to set the record straight. So you can start 2017 off with bang and your best skin ever, here are three popular skin care myths exposed.

Tanning Booths Are A Safe Way To Tan

It’s tempting in the winter months to seek a “summer glow” from a tanning bed. After all, you’ve heard that tanning beds provide a healthy way to get color because they don’t emit UVB rays, the so-called “sunburn” rays. But what you won’t hear is that a tanning bed still exposes you to UVA rays, which penetrate deeper into the skin than UVB, causing damage, premature aging and skin cancers.

The Higher the SPF, the Longer You Can Stay In The Sun

SPF tells you how well it protects you from the sun’s damaging UVB rays, not the length of time it protects you. An SPF of 15, for example, screens out about 93 percent of UVB light, while an SPF of 30 filters out 97 percent. Even in the winter months, when the sun is less intense, wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen which protects from both UVA and UVB rays is essential. When it doubt, keep it simple: Unless you live in a cave, an SPF of 30, applied daily, is your best bet for preventing sun damage.

 Your Makeup Provides Enough Protection

It’s terrific that many cosmetics have SPF built right in. We proudly carry Jane Iredale mineral cosmetics, which are expertly formulated with SPF to provide amazing coverage and beautiful results. But unfortunately, applying your makeup in the morning isn’t enough to protect you from the sun’s harmful rays if you’re planning on spending extended time outdoors. According to experts, you would need to apply 14 to 15 times the amount of makeup that a normal person would wear to reach the SPF stated on the cosmetic label. Bottom line: Applying a separate, broad-spectrum sunscreen in addition to your makeup is a must in your skin care routine.
